What is Some Tuesday?
The name Some Tuesday has its roots in a family saying that goes back generations. It started with Steve Dunlap Sr.’s father, who had a knack for putting off his son’s childhood requests with a smile. When young Steve Sr. asked for a new bicycle, a McDonald’s burger, or a model ship kit, his father would say, “Oh, some Tuesday, I suppose.” It was a lighthearted way of saying maybe later, and it stuck with Steve Sr. as he grew up.
Steve Sr. kept that phrase alive when he had his own son, Steve Jr. A Navy man who served over 30 years, Steve Sr. would use it whenever Steve Jr.
asked for something—a burger, a toy, or a trip somewhere. “Some Tuesday, I
suppose,” he’d reply, passing down the family line. Steve Sr. always dreamed of
owning a boat, too, and he’d joke that he’d get one “some Tuesday.” In 2000, he made good on that dream, buying a sturdy 1980s-era 36 foot Chris Craft aft-cabin cruiser. Then came the hard part: What to name her? He thought and thought and nothing felt quite right until Pat suggested "What about Some Tuesday?". Of course! The perfect nod to his father and all those years of waiting. Thus, Some Tuesday was born.
That boat became a family treasure. Every summer, Steve Sr. and his wife,
Pat—known as Gaga and Pop to their grandkids Annie, Joe, Hank, and Carter —took it down the Potomac River in Southern Maryland. The grandkids loved those trips, crabbing off the deck, splashing in the water, and especially tubing behind the Some Tuesday. It wasn’t built for it — a monstrous twin-engine cruiser makes a formidable wake — but they made do, laughing as they bounced along the wake. They’d even have sleepovers on the boat when it was docked at the harbor (which was a mere 150 feet from the house!), turning it into their summer hideout. The Some Tuesday was where they made memories, a special place for the whole family.
Years later, Steve Sr. and Pat moved to a retirement community, parting
ways with their beloved boat. The original Some Tuesday was sold,
but its spirit lingered in the family’s heart. Meanwhile, Steve Jr.—now Captain
Steve—harbored his own dream of owning a sailboat. After years of searching, he
found his prize in 2018: a sleek 2017 Lagoon 450S, a beautiful 45 foot sailing
catamaran. With the purchase secured, Steve faced the daunting task of naming
her. Writing the check was tough, but choosing a name felt monumental. For
weeks, he mulled over options, none quite right, until a conversation with his
14-year-old son, Hank, changed everything. “What about Some Tuesday?” Hank suggested, matter-of-factly, just as his grandmother had done years before.
It was perfect. What better way to honor his grandfather’s phrase, his
father Steve Sr., his mother Pat, and the boat that had shaped their
summers? The name wove together generations of Dunlaps, a thread of continuity on the water. And so, the new Some Tuesday was born. On March 17 2018, the Lagoon 450S was christened embarked on her maiden voyage, her crisp white sails billowing as Captain Steve stood at the helm. The boat was more than a vessel—it was a legacy, a bridge from Steve Sr.’s father to Hank and his younger brother Carter.
Somewhere, Steve Sr. was surely smiling, knowing his family’s “Some Tuesday”
had sailed into reality once more. Today, the Some Tuesday glides on,
crafting new chapters in the Dunlap story, a testament to dreams kept alive and a name that endures.
